Protaras is a 10 minute drive from Ayia Napa towards Famagusta and is basically a slightly quieter version of Ayia Napa. Protaras has been awarded the coveted EC Blue Flag in recognition of the quality of its beaches, and the slight currents ensure that the water is slightly cooler and cleaner than Ayia Napa. On the outskirts of Protaras is the small attractive stone church of Ayios Elias which sits on top of a rocky hill, which at night is eerily lit up. It is well worth a walk to the top from which there is a fine panoramic view of Protaras and the surrounding countryside.
