Ayia Napa, once a sleepy little fishing village, has become the most popular resort in Cyprus, attracting the majority of its fun and sun seekers from Scandinavia and the UK. Fast becoming the second Ibiza, you'll either love it or hate it, its loud, its bright, and at night the square has an infectious energy from the thousands of people that use it and the surrounding bars as a hang out before moving on to the numerous clubs.
The beaches in this part of the island are of golden white sand, the most popular by far being Nissi Beach, where you can relax and watch the world go by or partake in a little scuba-diving, water-skiing, Jet-skiing or if you feel so inclined jump off a crane attached to a bungee. For a quieter more family oriented beach Macronissos Beach is a mere 3 minute drive away. If you are looking for something a little different, spend the day at WaterWorld, which has a number of pools, slides, bars and restaurants to keep you occupied. Next door you can find the Go-Cart centre.
In the evening you can wander around the town, browse through the shops and stop at a café or bar for a "frappe" - a whipped iced coffee with or without milk, or visit the charming medieval monastery, which stands in the middle of the village; its 16th-century church partly underground and cut into the rock. Alternatively visit the Maritime Museum . If you feel like taking a drive, go up to Cape Greko and watch the sunset.
The restaurants are many and varied and on the whole not too over priced, and if you're running out of cash you can always settle for a Lountza (Cypriot smoked back bacon) and Haloumi sandwich, a veritable taste sensation not to be missed.
